The Quick Decision Framework

The Quick Decision Framework

Choose Asphalt if you:

Want strong performance in Wisconsin's freeze-thaw climate — with regular maintenance

Need your surface ready quickly (drive-ready in 24-48 hours)

Prefer lower upfront costs on medium to large projects

Value preventive maintenance that extends pavement life affordably

Choose Concrete if you:

Prioritize decorative appearance with stamped patterns or colors

Have a smaller project where concrete's lower equipment requirements make it cost-competitive

Can wait 7-10 days before using the surface

Understand the maintenance trade-offs in Wisconsin's climate

In southeastern Wisconsin, asphalt typically delivers better performance for driveways, parking lots, and roads — but the right choice depends on your project's scope, priorities, and how committed you are to ongoing maintenance. Here's what matters for both materials.

Understanding the Materials

Asphalt is aggregate (crushed stone, sand, gravel) bound with bitumen. It's heated during manufacturing, laid hot, and compacted into a flexible surface designed to move with temperature changes.

Concrete uses cement as the binder, mixed with water and aggregate. It's poured and cures over weeks to create a rigid surface that can be finished in a variety of decorative ways.

Why Climate Determines Performance

Wisconsin's freeze-thaw cycles put stress on any pavement. Water seeps into cracks, freezes, expands, and damages the surface from within. Neither material is immune.

Asphalt's flexibility is an advantage in cold climates — it can expand and contract without cracking as readily as concrete. But asphalt cracks too, especially as it ages and loses flexibility. Without regular maintenance, asphalt hardens over time and behaves more like concrete — vulnerable to the same freeze-thaw damage it was supposed to resist. When cracks form and go untreated, water penetrates below the surface, freeze cycles widen the cracks, and heaving follows.

Concrete's rigidity makes it more vulnerable to frost heaving from the start. Once cracked, repairs require cutting out and replacing entire sections rather than simply filling or resurfacing.

For both materials, proper base preparation and site work are the real foundation of long-term performance. A well-built base prevents many of the problems that plague both asphalt and concrete in Wisconsin's climate — and it's one of the things we pay close attention to on every project.

Cost Comparison

On medium to large projects, asphalt typically costs 30-50% less than concrete for installation. Asphalt requires specialized equipment, which spreads cost efficiently at scale. On smaller jobs, that equation can shift — concrete can be installed with less equipment, making it more cost-competitive for limited-scope work.

Long-term value depends heavily on maintenance. A properly installed and maintained concrete surface can last as long as asphalt. The difference in Wisconsin is often the cost of repairs when things go wrong: concrete repairs are more expensive and harder to stage incrementally. Asphalt's mid-life resurfacing option (around year 10-12) extends total lifespan at a fraction of replacement cost, if you stay ahead of maintenance.

Installation Timeline

Asphalt installs in 1-2 days and is ready for traffic in 24-48 hours.

Concrete requires 7-10 days before light traffic and 28 days for full strength.

Maintenance Requirements

Asphalt requires active preventive maintenance: sealcoating every 2-3 years, crack filling, and resurfacing when needed. Done consistently, this keeps the surface flexible and extends its life significantly. Neglect it, and you lose the climate advantage asphalt offers.

Concrete requires less frequent maintenance in stable climates. In Wisconsin, freeze-thaw cycles cause cracking, spalling, and joint damage in both materials — the difference is what those repairs cost and how easily they can be staged. Sealers can help protect concrete surfaces. One additional consideration: road salt, widely used in Wisconsin winters, can accelerate surface deterioration in concrete, contributing to spalling and scaling over time.

Appearance and Design

Asphalt provides a smooth, professional dark surface that absorbs heat and accelerates snow melt. It weathers to gray over time — regular sealcoating restores the dark finish and keeps it looking sharp. A well-maintained asphalt parking lot is a professional, attractive surface that doesn't require concrete to match it aesthetically.

One caveat: oil and fuel spills can break down asphalt over time, causing premature deterioration in areas with heavy vehicle traffic or fuel exposure. Addressing spills promptly and using appropriate sealers helps manage this.

Concrete offers more decorative versatility — stamped patterns, colors, and textures — with a lighter, brighter appearance.

If decorative finish is your priority, concrete has a clear advantage. Just factor in Wisconsin's climate and the maintenance that comes with it.

When Both Materials Make Sense

Sometimes the right answer is both.

A commercial parking lot, for example, might use asphalt for the main driving and parking areas while incorporating concrete pads for motorcycle parking or dumpster enclosures — applications where asphalt can deform under concentrated weight and summer heat.

Wolf Paving can coordinate that kind of mixed-material project, bringing in concrete subcontractors where it makes sense so you get one point of accountability across the whole job.

Environmental Impact

Asphalt is America's most recycled material — 99% of reclaimed asphalt is reused annually and is 100% recyclable into new pavement. At Wolf Paving, we prioritize recycled materials in our manufacturing process.

Best Applications

Asphalt excels for:

Residential driveways and commercial parking lots

Roads and highways in cold climates

Projects where performance, value, and maintainability are priorities

Concrete works well for:

Decorative patios, walkways, and specialty areas

Smaller projects where equipment requirements favor concrete

Specific applications like dumpster pads or motorcycle parking where asphalt may deform

Properties where decorative appearance is the primary driver

Why Manufacturing Matters

Wolf Paving manufactures our own asphalt and installs it with our own crews. The chemists designing your mix know Wisconsin's climate. The crews laying it understand how it was manufactured. Our quality control labs test at every phase, before, during, and after application.

Fun Fact: Racing on Asphalt

Both the Milwaukee Mile (oldest operating motor speedway in the world) and Road America are paved with asphalt!

Making Your Decision

For parking lots, roads, and long driveways in southeastern Wisconsin, asphalt is typically the superior choice—engineered for our climate, lower cost, and affordable maintenance.

Choose concrete if decorative appearance is your priority, understanding the higher costs and increased maintenance in Wisconsin's freeze-thaw climate.

Wolf Paving has served southeastern Wisconsin since 1941, manufacturing and installing asphalt throughout Columbia, Dane, Dodge, Green, Jefferson, Milwaukee, Rock, Walworth, Washington, and Waukesha counties.

Congratulations on your new asphalt pavement! Whether you've invested in commercial paving for your business or residential paving for your home, proper care ensures your asphalt paving lasts for decades. As paving experts serving Wisconsin and Northern Illinois since 1941, Wolf Paving has created this protection guide based on over 80 years of asphalt paving services experience.

Your new asphalt represents a significant investment. Without proper care, even the highest-quality asphalt paving can deteriorate prematurely. Following these 8 essential tactics will maximize your pavement's lifespan and protect your investment for generations.

Understanding the Asphalt Curing Process

Before diving into specific care tactics, understand that asphalt cures through oxidation and evaporation over 6-12 months. During this period, your pavement remains softer and more pliable. This is normal—asphalt's flexibility allows it to withstand Wisconsin's freeze-thaw cycles without cracking, making it ideal for our climate.

8 Essential Asphalt Protection Tactics

1. Wait at Least 3 Full Days Before Allowing Traffic

The most critical rule: keep automobile traffic off your new pavement for at least 3 full days (72 hours). In temperatures above 85°F, extend this to 4-5 days. You may walk on the pavement immediately, but premature vehicle traffic can create permanent depressions and scuff marks.

During the first few days, your asphalt paving is still releasing moisture and beginning oxidation. Vehicle weight and turning forces can create permanent damage. If you need accelerated access for a commercial paving project, discuss curing additives with your paving contractors before installation.

2. Water Down Your Asphalt on Hot Days

Asphalt softens in heat and hardens in cold. On days above 80°F, lightly spray your pavement with water 2-3 times during the hottest hours. This temporarily hardens the surface and reduces the risk of impressions.

If you see soapsuds, don't worry—this is a normal reaction between diesel fuel in the asphalt and chlorine in municipal water. Small puddles are also normal depending on the natural ground slope, but persistent standing water lasting more than 24 hours should be evaluated.

3. Vary Your Parking Location During the First Year

During the 6-12 month curing period, repeated weight in the same location can create permanent depressions. Vary your parking spot by 2-3 feet each day for residential paving, and rotate employee parking areas for commercial paving projects.

Never turn your steering wheel when stationary—this "dry steering" creates concentrated force and is a leading cause of surface damage. Make steering adjustments while rolling, even slightly.

4. Keep Heavy Vehicles Off Your New Asphalt

Standard vehicles are fine after 3 days, but keep delivery trucks, dumpsters, RVs, and construction equipment off for at least 30 days. For stored campers or trailers, place 2' x 2' pieces of plywood under tongue jacks and tires to distribute weight.

Never place jack stands or car ramps directly on new asphalt paving—always use plywood or rubber pads underneath. Once fully cured after 6-12 months, your pavement can handle normal heavy vehicle traffic.

5. Support Your Pavement Edges

Pavement edges are the most vulnerable area. Without lateral support, edges can crack and crumble. For residential paving, build up edges with topsoil and grass, decorative stone, or landscape beds. For commercial paving, install concrete curbing or asphalt curbing.

Until proper edge support is installed, avoid driving within 12 inches of the pavement edge.

6. Don't Worry About Texture Variations

Your asphalt paving may look smoother in some areas than others—this is completely normal. Asphalt contains various aggregate sizes that naturally distribute unevenly, creating texture variations. Areas spread by machine may differ slightly from hand-raked sections around edges and obstacles.

These variations don't affect structural integrity or longevity. What matters most is proper compaction, adequate thickness, and quality materials—all hallmarks of professional paving contractors.

7. Address Fluid Spills Immediately

Gasoline, oil, anti-freeze, and other petroleum-based fluids dissolve the asphalt binder, creating permanent damage. If a spill occurs:

Immediate response (within 5 minutes):

Absorb with cat litter, sawdust, or commercial absorbent

Let sit 15-30 minutes, then sweep up thoroughly

Scrub area with dish detergent and water within 24 hours

Prevention:

Fix vehicle leaks promptly

Use drip pans during oil changes

Keep absorbent materials accessible for commercial paving locations

Avoid refueling equipment over the pavement

Small damaged areas can be filled with cold patch, but contact your paving experts for larger spills requiring professional repair.

8. Seal Coat After 6-12 Months

This is the single most important maintenance step. Seal coating can double or triple your pavement's lifespan.
Why seal coating is essential:

Creates waterproof barrier preventing freeze-thaw damage

Protects against chemicals and UV radiation

Replenishes oils that evaporate from asphalt

Restores rich black appearance

Costs 10% of replacement while dramatically extending life

Critical timing: Wait 6-12 months for proper curing—sealing too early traps oils and prevents proper hardening. After the first application, reseal every 2-3 years for optimal protection.

Professional seal coating by experienced paving contractors delivers superior results compared to DIY products, using commercial-grade materials and proper application techniques.

Your First-Year Maintenance Timeline

Days 1-3: No vehicle traffic; foot traffic OK

Days 4-30: Regular vehicles permitted; vary parking daily; water on hot days; no heavy trucks

Months 2-6: Continue varying parking; monitor edges; address any fluid spills immediately

Months 6-12: Schedule professional seal coating; fill any cracks; evaluate edge support

Year 2+: Seal coat every 2-3 years; annual crack inspection; routine cleaning

Partner with Wisconsin's Trusted Paving Experts

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does asphalt take to fully cure?
Complete curing takes 6-12 months, but you can use the pavement after 3 days for normal vehicle traffic.

When should I call for repairs?
Contact paving experts when you notice cracks wider than ¼ inch, potholes, significant drainage problems, or edge deterioration. Early intervention is always more cost-effective.

Can I seal coat myself?
While DIY products exist, professional application by experienced paving contractors provides better results using commercial-grade materials and proper techniques that last significantly longer.

What causes asphalt to crack?
Thermal expansion/contraction, water infiltration, UV oxidation, poor drainage, heavy loads, and natural aging all contribute. Regular seal coating and prompt crack filling significantly reduce cracking.

Fall Is Last Call for Wisconsin Paving

Why It’s Actually a Smart Time to Pave Your Parking Lot

Why It’s Actually a Smart Time to Pave Your Parking Lot

No doubt you’ve seen plenty of asphalt paving activity this summer, which makes sense. Summer in Wisconsin offers the optimal weather conditions for blacktop installation.

But just because temps have cooled doesn’t mean all the paving fun is done! In fact, fall is a great opportunity to pave your facility’s parking lot or driveway … as long as you act quickly to get your project quoted and scheduled – and work with a paving company that provides proven expertise in autumn paving in the Dairy State.

Here are 3 key reasons to get on our calendar now.

Fewer Rain Delays

You might think summer and sunshine go together, but Wisconsin actually gets more precipitation in the spring and summer months than in the fall.

So if you get on Wolf Paving’s schedule in October, we’re more likely to be able to keep the date.

Faster Curing

Lower temperatures and humidity mean your asphalt sets and becomes drivable in less time.

On the other hand, faster-cooling asphalt also means less time for compaction – a critical process for creating a dense, strong, smooth, water-resistant surface. In other words, all the attributes you want for great-looking, long-lasting pavement.

Fortunately, Wolf Paving crews use advanced tools to calculate available compaction time. Our asphalt manufacturing experts are adept at creating optimal asphalt mixes for the current conditions. And our seasoned team follows industry best practices to achieve maximum compaction in the shortest possible time.

Preemptive Protection

If your parking lot is already showing signs of wear and tear, fall is the right time to fix it.

Whether you need parking lot pothole repairs or a full repave, getting it done now will prevent problems from getting a lot worse over the Wisconsin winter. Your fresh (or at least well-maintained) pavement will be more resistant to freeze-thaw cycles, salt corrosion and snow accumulation.

... Plus All the Other Reasons Not to Wait

These motivations to pave this fall add to all the advantages of getting new blacktop installed for your business, including:

Safety and accessibility – A flat, freshly paved surface eliminates cracks as well as areas where water can puddle and freeze. So there’s less risk of people slipping and falling.

Smoother experience – No visitor wants to hit a pothole in your parking lot, especially not when they’re already dealing with the rest of the stress of winter driving. Give them a smooth surface; they’ll appreciate it.

Enhanced curb appeal – Make your business more attractive to customers, tenants, visitors and the community. Boost and retain more business.

So if you’ve been wanting but waiting to repave your parking lot, why not go for it now. Get started with a free paving quote.

The month of September sure is beautiful in Wisconsin. But we all know a change in the weather isn’t far off.

As the leaves start to fall, it’s time to give your blacktop a preventative maintenance checkup. We’re here to help you keep your property looking great and your visitors satisfied – as well as save you money over time by extending the life of your parking lot, driveway or walkways.

To keep things simple, let’s break autumn asphalt maintenance down into 3 key tasks.

Inspect Closely: Walk the paved surface area, looking for signs of damage: cracks larger than 1/4 inch, potholes, heaving, oil stains, or faded paint. In particular, watch for pooling water – a potential safety hazard as the colder months approach. Check for puddles near the edges of pavement. Look out for potholes, too. Consider repairs before winter to prevent snow and ice buildup. Bonus Tip: Don’t forget signage and striping! Make sure parking lot signs and markings are easy to see and read.

Sweep it Clean: Get rid of the rotting leaves, gravel, rocks and other autumn debris. They’re not just unsightly now. They can cause lasting stains and decay of the blacktop. Minor stains don’t pose a risk beyond the aesthetics. But we recommend cleaning up larger stains. You might even need to replace a small section. Get more parking lot cleaning tips. Proper cleaning also makes it easier to spot cracks and other surface damage.

Repair it Right: If it’s been at least 3-5 years since you last had your asphalt seal coated, consider getting it done again. In addition, repair cracks to keep them from expanding and reduce future repair costs. And fill those potholes to avoid larger costs in the future and to prevent winter hazards.

Depending on the severity of the damage, you might need to decide between repairing or replacing your blacktop.

Finally, mark any tripping hazards in walkways with spray paint if you can’t get necessary repairs done right away.

How to Pave the Perfect Paddle Place

Common Questions about Pickleball Court Installation

Common Questions about Pickleball Court Installation

In case you missed it, pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country.

Demand for places to play is well ahead of supply. Many of the available pickleball courts are multipurpose ones adapted from tennis courts. There’s a lot of competition for playing time.

Want to help meet the demand by adding a dedicated pickleball court to your commercial facility or large residential property? Let’s take a look at some of the common questions you might have about pickleball court installation.

How Much Room Do You Need for a Pickleball Court?

The official court size is 20 by 44 feet, according to USA Pickleball’s court guidelines.

But practically speaking, you need an area that’s at least 30 feet by 60 feet. And USA Pickleball actually recommends 34 x 64 feet. After all, you want room for the most vigorous pickleball action, right?

Also, keep in mind that your court rectangle should be oriented north to south. That way, no paddler will have the sun right in their eyes.

What Is a Pickleball Court Made of?

Typically, it consists of a hard base with an acrylic surface. Those in the know at USA Pickleball say either asphalt or concrete makes a fine base.

But in Wisconsin, we recommend an asphalt foundation for sport courts including pickleball. It comes with a lower upfront cost than concrete. It’s easier on the knees. And perhaps most importantly, asphalt pavement is better in colder weather — less prone to freeze-thaw cracking and heaving.

Do You Need Lighting?

It’s only a must-have if you want to play at night and don’t already have some broad lighting at your site.

Two fixtures along the length of the court should suffice. But keep in mind that lighting could add thousands to your cost. And you might be restricted by local zoning or homeowners association rules.

What about Noise Reduction?

If you’re at all familiar with the sport, you know pickleball isn’t exactly quiet (especially compared to its cousin tennis).

Some people enjoy the thwack of the plastic ball on the racquet. Others, not so much. You might have heard of some controversy in your community. It’s enough racquet racket that you should be considerate of your neighbors.

Besides not playing into the wee hours, try adding some landscaping around your court. Tall, thick hedges can cut the noise well. It also helps to have enough space that you can go with plenty of setback from adjoining properties.

By the way, you likely don’t need a tall fence around your court to keep the balls in. Just some grassy space will do, because pickleballs won’t fly far or bounce away on the grass.

How Long Does It Take to Install a Pickleball Court?

The process is similar to a typical seven-step asphalt installation and takes a few weeks.

First up is site grading and subbase preparation. These key steps, which ensure a stable foundation and proper drainage, take a couple of days.

Following base prep, we install the strong binder layer. Then it’s time for the top asphalt surface.

That asphalt needs to cure for 2 weeks before we do two coats of the acrylic playing surface. Once that’s cured in another 2 days, you’re ready to play!

How Much Does It Cost?

We end with the trickiest question.

Cost will vary based on a number of factors. These include the lighting, landscaping and amenities you want to include. The most unpredictable part is the condition of the soil where you want to put your court.

One way to know the cost for sure: Request a reliable, free quote from your pickleball court paving partners at Wolf Paving!

Parking Lot Cleaning Tips

Try These Easy Ways to Dress Your Business for Success

Try These Easy Ways to Dress Your Business for Success

Never underestimate the first impression a parking lot makes. Dirt, disorder and damage can quickly turn off customers, tenants and employees.

But a nice, clean parking lot? That pleases people and puts them at ease. It discourages littering and pests. Extends the life of your blacktop – especially if it’s porous asphalt. It also reduces runoff pollution in local waterways and makes a great space for additional finishing touches.

Keep your surface tidy with these key parking lot cleaning tips.

Get a Regular Professional Cleaning

Regular cleaning helps to:

Remove surface dirt and debris.

Reveal necessary repairs, like cracks or potholes.

Clean away harmful vehicle fluids that can deteriorate your asphalt prematurely.

If possible, a contract street sweeper can make a big difference in the look, texture and lifespan of your parking lot. But if a professional job isn’t in your budget, you might consider a DIY option.

Can You Pressure Wash Your Parking Lot?

Yes, pressure washing your parking lot is a great cleaning option.

A hose rated at least 3000 PSI will remove dirt in short order. But a word of warning: using a pressure washer on oil or other deep-seated stains can make things worse by driving the material deeper into surface pores. That brings us to our next tips.

What to Do about Those Really Tough Parking Lot Stains

You may need to treat these pesky problems with specific tools and techniques:

Grease

Apply baking soda and white vinegar – the classic household cleaner combo. Or, for concrete, try using a soda like Coke or Sprite. The combination of carbonated water, phosphoric acid and citric acid work into the stain to help lift it away.

Let sit for 15 to 30 minutes. Then use a broom with firm bristles to scrub. Remove remaining residue with a mop and warm soapy water.

Oil
Anywhere cars and trucks sit idle for a while, you might get small puddles of oil.

As soon as you see oil on your lot, blot up as much as possible.

You can also use kitty litter for absorption. When the excess oil is soaked up, sweep away the kitty litter.

If a stain remains, try the grease cleaning tips above. Avoid trisodium phosphate or other commercial degreasers unless absolutely necessary. These unhealthy chemicals can drain into waterways.

Mulch or Leaf Stains
Apply soap or vinegar and scrub with a brush in a circular motion.

Rinse the soapy solution away using a low pressure rinse.

If the stain persists, try mixing one capful of bleach with one gallon of warm water. Please use sparingly! Scrub in a circular motion, let the solution sit for 30 minutes, and then wash it away with warm water.

Noticing Damage to Your Clean Parking Lot?

It’s best to take care of it ASAP. Here are some pointers on how to properly fill a pothole. Or, if the damage is more extensive, check out our advice on whether to repair or repave your blacktop.

Get to Know Some of the Gadgets & Gear That Support Your Satisfaction

Get to Know Some of the Gadgets & Gear That Support Your Satisfaction

Asphalt paving has been around a long time. Centuries, in fact! But that doesn’t mean the tools and technology we use to pave are all throwbacks.

Quite the contrary: To build strong, smooth surfaces across our Wisconsin asphalt paving service areas, our team uses technology that’s a lot more cutting edge than you might expect.

Let’s take a look at some of the gadgets and gear we use to ensure your satisfaction—from the plant, to the jobsite, and across our operations.

At the Plant

Tightly controlling the quality of asphalt mixes is the No. 1 reason we operate our own asphalt manufacturing plants.

First, we leverage robust process control technology to ensure:

Precise aggregate composition

Proper processing speeds

Safe and sustainable operation

Then, when each mix is done, we store it in bulk tanks with advanced control that maintains the asphalt at optimal temperatures.

Finally, we make sure every mix meets the exact standards for your job through rigorous asphalt sample testing including:

Binder stiffness and flexibility – Helps show whether material may be prone to cracking at low temps. Learn more about the binder in our glossary of 13 essential asphalt paving terms).

Penetration testing – Shows how strong and uniform the material is.

Dynamic analysis – Measures properties including load, compressive, and shear strength.

At the Jobsite

In the end, the quality and longevity of a blacktop surface comes down to how well it’s installed.

That’s why our crews tap into a variety of technologies to make sure your asphalt paving job meets exacting standards, looks great and lasts long.

GPS – We use global navigation satellite system (GNSS) technology to measure and stake out proper grading.

Laser-guided transit – Where GPS is unavailable, laser technology helps us accurately and efficiently decipher height and grade changes.

Paving equipment with advanced controls – Many of our machines include powerful operator interfaces to help our team produce great results.
Should You Repair Or Repave Your Blacktop?

5 Questions to Help Make the Call and Get Started This Summer

5 Questions to Help Make the Call and Get Started This Summer

Look here, those cracks or potholes in your parking lot or driveway aren’t going to fix themselves.

But besides, can they, or should they, even be fixed? Or do you really need to replace your pavement entirely?

When the weather turns warm in Waunakee, Waukesha or West Allis, it’s time to sort this issue out. Because quality contractors like Wolf Paving are quickly getting booked up for the season.

So let’s get right into 5 questions to determine if a repair or repave is the right move.

1. What’s the Nature of Your Cracks or Potholes?

Or are they few and far between, and mostly shallow? Limited cracks less than a quarter inch wide are easy enough for experts to repair, as are a couple of small potholes.

But if you have deeper or wider cracks, or they’re all over the place, then it might be time to replace your pavement.

2. How Old Is Your Pavement?

A quality pavement installation can last 30+ years, only if it’s well-maintained, of course.

If your blacktop is over 20 years old, while showing a lot of cracks, that’s a sign it’s stressed out. Repairs might extend the life of your pavement a couple of years. But you’re likely to need more, and possibly more significant, repairs again before long.

3. Do You Ever Have Pooling Water?

Pooling water caused by poor drainage will accelerate the demise of your asphalt.

In the Wisconsin winter, it will make freeze-thaw damage worse. Plus, it’s a safety issue when that pooling water freezes.

And it might be a sign of problems underneath, depending on the answer to the next question:

4. Is There Sinking and Shifting on the Surface?

We can mill down a small bump or two in one area. But deeper shifts or depressions in your pavement suggest an unstable subbase. That’s the foundational layer beneath the asphalt.

If it turns out you need subbase stabilization, then a full repave is in order.

5. What Are Your Options?

Depending on the answers to the questions above, filling potholes and cracks promptly and sealcoating your surface can help you put off a full repave for many years.

Meanwhile, as a mid-level approach, your pavement might be a candidate for an asphalt overlay. That’s where we apply a new layer of asphalt right on top of your existing surface.

It’s a cost-effective option, but it’s only viable if the current surface and subbase are in good shape. For more information, refer to these 5 asphalt overlay factors.

Here’s the Best Way to Answer These Questions:

Get an asphalt expert to examine your parking lot or driveway and recommend your best approach.

At Wolf Paving, we will give you an honest answer based on decades of experience.

With summer in full swing, now is the time to tackle your repair or repave project. To get your project started, request your free consultation today.

Gain the Knowledge You Need to Hit the Pavement Running

Considering a paving project this year? Now’s the time to prepare!

It’s a good idea to start with a foundation of asphalt industry lingo. Because, like any industry, asphalt paving comes with its own technical jargon. When you know the key terms, you can help ensure you get the results you need.

Let’s get you up to speed with these 13 asphalt paving terms every leader should know.

1. Asphalt

Also called bitumen, asphalt is a refined product of crude oil.

At Wolf Paving’s asphalt manufacturing plants, we combine asphalt with aggregate (crushed stone, gravel, sand or recycled asphalt) to make:

Hot-mix asphalt – The most common type for flexibility and weather resistance

Warm-mix asphalt, which is increasingly popular because it uses less fossil fuel

Cold-mix asphalt, which is ideal for winter pothole repair

2. Binder Layer

The binder is the first layer of a new asphalt installation. It goes just above the subbase (see farther down this list).

We mix large aggregate with the asphalt, making it strong and durable.

3. Butt Joints

It’s one of the funnier-sounding asphalt terms you’ll hear. However, butt joints are serious business!

They’re the areas where the new surface meets old asphalt or concrete. We have to pay special attention in these areas to ensure effective water runoff and a safe, smooth transition.

4. Compaction

Compaction is how we make sure the asphalt is packed down strong.

Using rollers, we compress the base and the surface to remove air pockets and create a smooth, strong pavement.

5. Geo-Grid

Geo-grid is an option to create a solid support structure for new asphalt.

It’s a synthetic mesh that helps stabilize the base material beneath the blacktop. When we use geo-grid, we don’t have to dig as deep as we do with the traditional undercutting method (see below) of stabilization.

6. Grading

Water pooling on your surface can cause damage fast. Proper grading allows the water to drain.

We use graders – machines with large blades – to set the pitch for the final surface. For example, we often grade so that water will flow toward a grassy area.

7. Milling

If the subbase (see below) is in great shape, milling is an excellent option for a rapid refresh of asphalt.

The process involves removing and replacing only the top layer of asphalt without disturbing the underlying subbase. So it’s much faster and the cost is much lower than a full reconstruction.

8. Overlay

Also called asphalt resurfacing, an overlay can be even faster and lower cost than milling.

It involves installing a layer of fresh asphalt (typically 1.5 up to 3 inches thick) right over the existing surface. But, of course, we need to make sure the existing surface and subbase are in good condition. Otherwise, an overlay won’t last long.

9. Proof Roll

Once the subbase is nice and compact, we do this extra step to ensure the underlying surface is strong and ready for new asphalt.

A Wolf Paving proof roll involves driving a quad-axle dump truck, loaded with 72,000 pounds, row by row over the entire surface. Along the way, we look for any flexing of more than an inch – a sign that it needs more compaction.

10. Pulverizing

Also known by the fancier term “full depth reclamation,” asphalt pulverizing is like milling.

Only in this case we’re grinding up the existing asphalt and blending it with the subbase right on site. It saves money and time and it’s more sustainable because we don’t need to haul in new materials.

11. Sealcoating

Sealcoating is a surface treatment that restores and protects asphalt. It’s a thin liquid layer added to help prevent damage caused by UV rays, rain and snow, and fluids from vehicles.

We recommend a sealcoat application every 3-5 years.

12. Subbase

The subbase is the super-important layer of material beneath the asphalt surface. Besides providing stable support for new pavement, it also acts as a frost barrier to help reduce freeze-thaw damage.

It's crucial to get this layer right. Stabilizing the subbase often involves pulverizing, incorporating additives like lime and concrete to strengthen it, and rolling for optimal compaction.

13. Undercutting

Soft spots in your subbase? We use undercutting to repair those.

This process involves digging down below the surface 2 or 3 feet and replacing the underlying soft clay or soil with stronger aggregate material.

5 Fun & Functional Finishing Touches for Your Parking Lot

Think Outside the Lines with These Finishing Touches for Your Parking Lot

Think Outside the Lines with These Finishing Touches for Your Parking Lot

Is your parking lot just a place where cars and trucks come and go? Or could it be something more?

If you’re planning a parking lot paving project, why not consider it an opportunity to add unique value for visitors. From pretty to practical, here are five ways to add finishing touches for your customers, employees and community to enjoy.

1. Trees

With proper planning, trees can enhance the aesthetics of any lot while providing cooling shade. Plus, placing them in below-grade landscape islands can play a key role in stormwater management.

Work with a landscape expert to select larger, salt-tolerant canopy trees such as hybrid elms and oaks. The branches of these higher-growth trees won’t interfere with nearby vehicles. You might also need fast-draining loamy soils that are suitable for use under pavement.

2. Fitness Facilities

Got some space on the perimeter or along a central island? Consider including outdoor workout equipment.

A series of simple, low-maintenance stations takes a small upfront investment. But it could add just the right perk for employees looking to get a bit of exercise and fresh air to break up their day.

3. Last Mile Solutions

Do your visitors need to get farther than your front door? Last mile solutions can make it easier and more fun.

Today, there’s any number of electric scooter and bike share programs to choose from. While you’re at it, you might also look into adding an EV charging station. Although it’s a significant investment and responsibility, it’s an amenity that’s in increasingly high demand.

4. Storage Space

Don’t forget the equipment and supplies you need outdoors. Reserving a small section of your lot for storage can be a big plus for operations.

Depending on your needs, there’s a wide range of outdoor containers and structures available. You don’t have to break the bank to store and protect essential gear with a bit of style.

5. Artwork or Branding

Fresh pavement looks beautiful — especially if it’s done by our team! But it can also be a blank/black canvas for even greater visual interest.

How about some colorful stenciled artwork that relates to your organization? A company logo or other branded design is a memorable way to build affinity with your brand. Just keep in mind that you’ll need to plan regular upkeep so that it stays looking good.
